Serving Dominican and Haitian Pastors and People
Administrating a Spanish Bible College, Pastoring an English-speaking Church,
and just a little bit more...
What are you doing?
* Administrating the Spanish Bible College. We are serving the Biblical educational needs of a few hundred Spanish-speaking pastors here on the north coast. This involves weekend seminars for our bi-vocational Pastors and weekend workshops for Pastors throughout the D.R. We will be assisting the production of another Experiencing God weekend. The September event in Santo Domingo will actually be taught by Dr. Henry Blackaby himself.
* Along with the local Spanish Bible College we are taking all the classes directly to video media. This will allow Spanish-speaking Pastors and people around the world to have access to every class for free. This is a painstaking undertaking as every class has to be re-written and formatted into multiple 9 minute videos. This format will allow an entire Bible college program to be held on a zip drive. Imagine the portability and accessibility that will be available for Pastors around the world. You can view one of the classes by clicking this link. This video is part of a 35 part teaching session by Dr. Tony Ponceti on Biblical Church Administration. Over 200 Pastors have taken the course here in the Dominican, and we believe through the video release to share it with thousands.
* Raising up and training abstinence educators for the Spanish-speaking world.
* Pastoring the English-speaking church here on the north coast. The English speaking population has exploded here on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic. These are people from all over Europe, Canada, and even Russia. These are people who have been unexposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are dedicated to reaching this unreached people group through our church program, weekly Bible studies, and personal evangelistic events.
* Leading the teaching portions of mission teams who arrive here every month from the U.S. and Canada. Mike will be training the students and adults in basic mission service and cross-cultural ministry. Mike speaks from experience and passion and calls young people to consider mission work for their life calling.
* Part of our work involves finding Doctors to serve in our medical clinic. You can see a little about that by clicking this link.
* We serve the New Missions Churches providing ministry to the poorest of the poor in a number of little communities here on the north coast. Come spend a little time at one of these services any time you can. Many find that a visit has changed the way they think about their home church, and what it means to be a passionate follower of Christ.
EARTHQUAKE NEWS
The Quake was felt here in our town across the border in the Dominican and the lights swung back and forth at the mission house. We were with Haitian missionaries at the time at a Missionary meeting on the other side of the Island. It was a very emotional time as we tried to get information out of Haiti. Our central mission in Haiti has to be almost completely rebuilt. We lost 25 of our 54 buildings. The mission has hired a team of twenty-one nurses to assist with the work in Haiti as our medical clinics were rendered unusable. Currently there are 150 US Marines and 350 US Navy personnel using our mission as a central command. We have people working round the clock and are helping with the overall relief effort. NO I CANNOT GET YOU INTO HAITI. The mission is a closed base since the military has come in. It does however provide a way to get the needed food directly to us to feed the 9000 students the central mission serves. In the coming months we will be able to get you in, but not right now. UPDATE: The Haitian Mission center will be closed to mission teams throughout the 2010 summer season. Security is incapable of providing a safe environment for those traveling in Haiti.
The aftermath leaves both Haiti and the Dominican reeling. There are currently over 1 million Haitians living in the Dominican. They estimate that could double or triple in the coming months. There is no work for the Haitians here either and that creates crime, and civil unrest. Our Haitian villages will be overrun with needs. Unfortunately much of this need will be overshadowed by the plight of the country of Haiti itself. Please pray for us as we prepare to provide education and medical care for those fleeing Haiti. Now about your support. PLEASE - PLEASE send your financial support to mission works that have been working in Haiti for many years. There is a lot of money being wasted right now providing Haiti with things they didn't have before the quake. Be a good steward. Find out where your money is going and why they need to do that with it. New Missions (www.newmissions.org) has been in Haiti for 27 years. Consider that in your giving. Consider why the troops chose this mission to Headquarter their troops.
Thank you for your prayers. We fight back tears with each phone call. This can be the church's finest hour as we live the love of Jesus before the people of Haiti. Please pray Church, and then let the Church be the Church.
How exactly did Mike and Terica decide to go to the Dominican Republic?
Good question. Following the leadership of God would be the first response. I look back at the past 25 years of our marriage. Mike had no intention to become a comedian back in the early days of our marriage! But he did that for 18 years. Mike had no intention to become the most-booked PRC speaker in the country. But that was his lot for 8 years. Terica never intended to leave the legal profession and pursue a career in music education, but after receiving a full scholarship to College for that, to school she went. Following the Lord has always been a great adventure! We have been blessed to having been born in the US, raised in great families, given the gift of salvation, and now we are simply trying to give a little back. The Bible says, To those who are given much - much is required (Luke 12:48). After years of leading summer teams to the Dominican, the day that the need and the call to the Dominican became greater than the call to stay in Florida. The mission we are serving operates a Medical Center that serves the poorest of the poor, provides a school system (1500 students in the Dominican and 9000 students in Haiti) to those who could not afford to go to school, provides church facilities to multiple Spanish, Haitian, and English speaking people groups. The Dominican facility also houses the classes and studios of the International Spanish Bible College ministry which keeps Mike very busy.
